Firstly, I loved Hereditary. I finally watched Midsommer and I hated it. One reason was the gore factor. Hereditary had it's graphic moments which were effective. In Midsommer, I felt the gore was over the top and did not add anything to the story. I found the film to be extremely disturbing and it left me feeling awful. Heres me thinking its a movie version of midsommer murders the uk tea time show. Midsommar may queen dress. You totally missed the mark on setup not paying back. It was tied up extremely well, for the sake of spoliers, I cant elaborate further. Her sense of being abandoned by her bf, loss of her family - everything is referenced back multiple times. Hate to disagree with Lord Stuckmann! but you didnt get this one right.

The reason the movie ends with Dani smiling (imo) is because she's been depressed for months and this is the first time she feels embraced and understood since the death of her. wait for it. FAMILY. We know from early on in the movie that Christian was planning on breaking up with her before he finds out about what happened. When we meet him he's already emotionally checked out, but he stays faithful to her because it's the decent thing to do, because it would look bad if he followed through on his original plan. He doesn't actually have a change of heart, though. When he's comforting a grieving Dani, he looks like he'd rather not be there. He's there for her physically, ambivalently not emotionally, spiritually, ardently, etc. If her family's demise is the gaping wound in her soul, the lie of lingering as her boyfriend is a band-aid. What festers underneath is her disproportionate wrath when she finds out that he doesn't actually care for her. Christian got what was coming, not for cheating on Dani, but for pretending to care and dragged his friends down with him. or, haha theme go whoosh.
